First performed in the 1830s, La Sylphide is not only the oldest surviving classical ballet, but also probably one of the most delicate and poignant performances in the world. The story of how one can lose happiness, and even life, in pursuit of an illusory dream is a true symbol of the Romantic era with its leading theme of the discord between imagination and reality. The airy, enchanting Sylphide leads an earthly young man away from his bride, captivating him with her elusiveness and translucent beauty, but she cannot be happy with him either. Sylphide perishes when her lover tries to bind her to him forever, leaving him inconsolable and heartbroken.
At the Bolshoi Theatre, the performance is staged in a version by the Dane Johan Kobborg, who carefully transferred to the stage of the country's main theatre the pas de deux created almost 200 years ago by his compatriot August Bournonville.
