The Nutcracker is the most festive of all fairy tales. And Yuri Grigorovich's ballet is the most festive of all Nutcrackers.
From the very first bars of music, from the first snowflake flying over the stage, the audience is inevitably overcome with anticipation of a real holiday.
Girls in fancy dresses, boys with sabres, Drosselmeyer's wonderful toys – and finally, to the most beautiful and exciting music, the Christmas tree grows, turning cynical adult spectators into children waiting for a miracle. And the miracle will surely happen.
And the fact that in the end the whole story turns out to be just a little girl's dream is just what New Year is for: to dream and see fairy-tale dreams.
Libretto by Yuri Grigorovich based on the fairy tale of the same name by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann (using motifs from Marius Petipa's scenario).
